Well, it is a snowy day. The Quilt shop is not open right now, we are waiting for the weather and the roads to improve. I'll post as soon as we are open.
Last week during the sale, everyone was making the Auntie's Too bags. Lois made one, Amy, Ginny, Mary, and that left me...... They kept telling me how much fun it was.
Then yesterday I found this pattern that I had purchased a while ago....

After having a very long day at school yesterday I stopped at the Quilt Shop. I treated myself to a new Bali Pop group, ( it's like a rainbow,) then this morning I started. The pattern calls for clothesline inside the strip, but I am using flannel. I need 20 strips.... 5 done.....

I just love the bow on the top. Stay tuned..... I'll post my progress.

Embroidery is fun

I used to do all kinds of hand embroidery, crewel, needlepoint, cross stitch, and then I bought my first BERNINA that does machine embroidery. I admit I don't do it often, but I am trying to add it to more of my sewing/quilting projects. We have two new embroidery collections available at the Quilt shop now, Bold and Beautiful has some beautiful floral designs, perfect for spring projects, and Stitch n Bloom has beautiful swirl designs that can be added to clothing, home dec, etc.
We have these in stock right now, come on over and get yours. If you have never tried machine embroidery, ask for a demonstration of one of our BERNINA embroidery machines.

It is now 6:01 p.m. My jammies are on.... I am pooped, but oh what a great sale we had.

We even had a visit from Reilly. Amy tried to teach him to sew,

Now we are getting ready for our next event, our Log Cabin marathon on Saturday. We still have a few spots open. Find a friend and sign up together, remember, all of your strips are cut for you, you just bring your center squares and sit down to sew. We even give you lunch!

Wow, what a great day! So many friends, both new and old came to the Quilt Shop for our sale.
At one point we had bolts everywhere, but we had lots of happy quilters! People were having a ball.
Everything in the store is one sale, 20% off, notions, kits, threads, fabrics,......
Plus remember, tomorrow is the last day to sign up for classes at the 20% off price. Some of our classes have almost filled up, so come on over early tomorrow, we open at 9 for the sale.

She doesn't have a name yet.... but she does have some great hoop earrings. Stay tuned, she isn't dressed yet.

Everyone is making these great bags from Auntie's Too. We are taking names of people insterested in a class. Looks like we have enough interest. As soon as I know the dates, I'll let you know.

The bag I showed you in the last post is from a pattern called Bailey Island Hobo bag, from Auntie's Two. We will have the pattern this week. Oriental Fans

Amy is at it again. She made this beautiful Oriental Fan table runner first, then loved the pattern so much, she adapted it to a quilt. I just love the pink and gray fabric combinations that she used.

This is a class in our winter schedule. Amy will show you how to do both projects.

I have finished 10 blocks, they are hanging up at the store...

This really is fun, it's kind of addicting. I cut 4 blocks at a time, put all my pieces in a ziploc bag with my paper pattern ready to go. Then when I have a little sewing time, I can sit down and make a block or at least part of a block.

Amy just finished her version of "Cut Flowers" She has a large collection of Kaffe Fasset fabrics, so she picked the floral ones out and created this beautiful quilt. It would be pretty out of any fabrics, batiks, 30's, Amy Butler, etc. This will be a class:

CUT FLOWERS
Showcase intensely hued, fussy cut blooms in simple Snowball units
arranged by color and sewn into blocks separated by sashing.

Star light Star bright

I have started working on a rather large project, it is a new book from our dear friends Claire Oehler and Nancy Mirman called Constellation of Stars. It is a collection of paper pieced star blocks that come in two sizes, 12 inch and 5 inch. By using a wonderful sashing technique with light and dark fabrics, this quilt has the illusion of rings around the stars. When I first got the book, I thought, oh no, am I over my head. Fear not.... it isn't bad at all, in fact it is lots of fun. Claire and Nancy made it easy by giving you great directions and wonderful hints along the way. I started this quilt last Saturday, as of this morning I have 4 12 inch blocks done and 4 5 inch blocks done....
I'm not sure I will be done with the quilt before the class starts... but I will keep on posting my progress here on the blog. This class starts in Feb....

I'm done, just finished the last 3 lollipop bags. I have one more cut and ready to sew.... just in case I forgot someone. Of course I had so much help finishing the bags today......

Finally they are done. I made a patriotic one for our school nurse, her daughter is in Afghanistan. The one with the NYC fabric and cabs is for our school secretary, she loves going to shows in NYC.
I also had time to make an IPad cover for my friend Kristen who got an IPad this year. I used some of the new Dr Seuss fabric that arrived recently! And now it's time to wrap!

Santa came early

12 days and counting

When you are 6 you count the days till Santa with eager anticipation.... so most of the day I deal with that. Then I come home, look in my sewing room and see the list of unfinished projects, or the unstarted gift projects..... and I don't have that eager anticipation anymore. I'm not in panic mode yet!
Last night Amy, Ginny, Lois and I worked to create some Lollipop bags... we were turning them out like crazy. If you haven't tried this bag yet, you can get the whole bag finished in less than 90 minutes for the first bag. Once you make one, they are like chips, you can't stop making them!

3 done... one more to go.

Now.... here is what I have been working on. I can't say anything about it, it is a gift for someone. It's a sewing machine cover, complete with embroidery, decorative stitches, free motion quilting, and beautiful Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
Shhhhhhh..... it's a secret.

A groovy time was had by all.....

This was a fun day. First we had our last meeting of Groovy Girls. Groovy Girls will start again next Spring, but it wont be a monthly club. It will be held as an event. Stay tuned for more on that.
Anyway, for our last show and tell, we had some beautiful projects.

Elizabeth brought in lots of different projects, two table runners, a potholder, and this beautiful baby quilt for her new niece. She used a printed flannel, used her BERNINA 730 to embroider in the squares, and then used a decorative stitch to stitch in between the squares.

Jan brought in her great Grovy Girl wallet, and her Grinch pillowcase

Maureen brought in her Groovy Girl aprons, and her "boo boo"

Joni brought in her turkey table runner, she finished it just in time for Thanksgiving!
Then after Groovy Girls...... 7 of us stayed for a Lollipop bag class.
Everyone finished their lollipop bag.!
Thanks to all of my Groovy Girls! You are the best!

changes, changes

I saw the brand new Koala cabinets today..... all I can say is WOW. They are absolutely beautiful.
You really need to see them in person, but take my word for it, they are amazing. They are all sizes, so you can literally custom create the cabinet that you want in the finish that you want. No matter how big or small your sewing space, we have a cabinet that will work for you.

I am making the coolest project, but I can't show you as the person I am giving it to reads this blog.

It has lots of decorative stitching on it, and I am even going to embroider on it!

I'll post a picture soon. I promise you it will be worth the wait.

So, what is new at the quilt shop? Well, this week Lois and Ginny have been busy reorganizing and getting ready for brand new Koala cabinets. I haven't seen them yet, but I know they will be gorgeous.

And to top it off, we are getting ready for our new Winter Schedule. Here is a little sneak peak. This will be a class in the new schedule, it is a great Log Cabin quilt. Here is the best part.... the strips will be pre cut for you. All you have to do is come with a spool of thread and some basic sewing supplies and you are ready to start sewing. We have lots of different ways for you to set your blocks too.

If you are interested in this class, call and let us know. We will put you on a list and as soon as the schedule is set up, we'll let you know the dates and times.

a spare machine?

We have spare tires in our cars..... spare pairs of shoes, spare dishes, spare coats, let's face it, we have lots of spare items in our lives. Do you have a spare sewing machine? People get a spare machine for a variety of reasons, traveling, taking to retreats, or to have a machine to use when one machine is out for it's service. We have two great machines to pick from..... This is the bernette 46. It is a great machine for someone who is just starting to sew, or a great back up machine that you can travel with.

The BERNINA 215- is the most basic BERNINA machine, but it gets the job done! It's lightweight and completely portable. Stop in to see them both soon!

Little Luxuries

These are the projects from Virtual BERNINA club today. We learned about using the ruffler, and the binder attachment for the BERNINA.

This is the Little Duffle Bag. It has decorative sttiches, a silk ruffle and a zipper.

This is the lingerie bag. It has decorative stitching, scalloped cording, and an embroidered monogram

This is the jewelry pouch. It has binding around the circles and lots of small pockets to hold little pieces of jewelry.

This is the necklace holder, there are little loops at the top where you attach the necklace, a loop in the middle to hold it in place, and a velcro closed pocket to hold the locket or large part of the necklace.

We had a great time today, our next Virtual BERNINA Club is January 28th. I haven't seen the project yet, but I hear it is a sewing basket.

Hmmmm, maybe I need to go to the tool dept

My husband has created a workshop in our basement. He has spent 2 weeks, cleaning it out, painting it, adding lights, adding organized shelves, even got the neatest little green bins for his nails and screws.
Last night we went to Sears and bought the workbench, and several roll around carts for his tools and supplies....

I keep thinking.... that would make a great cutting table, think of the threads and notions I could keep in there.
Maybe he will tackle my room next.

I just finished this on Friday morning. It is a new pattern from Eleanor Burns, called Trim the Tree. It was a breeze to make, and lots of fun to decorate. Today was our November Groovy Girls Meeting. As usual, we had a great time. Our show and tells get better and better each time. Our theme this month was "Fiesta", but I turned it into a birthday party! Sad to say no one had a birthday, but everyone will be ready for the next time!

Our project this month was a chair cover and matching placemat.

I thought I knew every BERNINA foot that there was.... but today I found a new one.
#38. #38 does an awesome job on attaching Velcro. I always hated putting velcro on to anything, but this foot made it so easy. It is a specially designed foot for attaching thinker trims. One side of the foot is low, the other is high.

That's what is so great about BERNINA machines, there is a foot for every kind of sewing you could think of!

Our first Jelly Roll Race is over! I think we all slept soundly last night. We did have so much fun.
The best part was... everyone finished, and everyone had a great time.
Remember, the next Jelly Roll Race is on November 19th.

I'm starting to think about the gifts that I need to get made for Christmas. I don't want to think about it!

I found a great new pattern from Terry Atkinson of Atkinson Deisgns- the Lollipop bag. I made this cute bag this morning, in about 90 minutes. If you skip the rosette and put a button or a yo yo, it would take even less time. The bag comes in two sizes. This is the large version. The bottom is boxed so it stands up. We just ordered the patterns, so they should be in stock soon. If you want us to save you one, just call and let us know.... 203-743-0543.

Today was our Jelly Roll Races. Our winner- Donna Orrico, who finished her quilt top in 45 minutes. Everyone had a great time, and came away with a beautiful quilt top. Can't sew? No Power? You can still cut.... especially if you treat yourself to the new GO cutter from Accuquilt. I cleaned my sewing room, ( sort of). I found a bunch of fabrics that were too small for any big project, but just too big to throw away. I spent the afternoon cutting squares, triangles, etc.
We have the GO Baby cutter on sale now for $125.

This is a great new collection from Benartex, crazy daisy! I am using it for the next Groovy Girl project.... here is a hint!

What a weekend. We hope that all of our faithful friends and customers are safe and sound, and that you all get your power back soon. We all made it through safely. remember as quilters, we have a great way to stay warm. I had 4 quilts on me, one cat and my beloved Ugg boots!

Yesterday was our Groovy Girls meeting. It was a baby themed meeting. We learned about choosing borders, and how to make the cutest little bib.

Jan finished her Dr Seuss tumbler quilt and she made a pillow to go with it.

Joanne finished her first quilted project, a bedrunner for her bed

It took 10 years, but Donna finished her Quilt for a Cure Quilt.

But best of all, our friend Phyllis is on a roll, finishing her quilt tops into quilts!

What a super pudgy day

Today was our Super Saturday.... great deals on BERNINA Sewing machines.
It was also our Pudgy Pumpkin class.... this is our friend Regina who has come every year for the last 10 years to make a pumpkin. She is our pumpkin champion! Tomorrow is our Groovy Girl meeting- 10-12, then the store opens at 12. We have lots of new fabrics, stop in to see what we have!

Super Saturday is this Saturday, October 22nd. It is also our October BERNINA Club meeting.

This is the project we will learn about..... this great vest. It is a brand new Indygo Junction pattern that uses some great BERNINA embellishment techniques to make it a one of a kind creation. I used strip piecing, decorative stitching, free motion couching, BSR quilting, and edge stitching.

I bet you often wondered how we get ideas for new projects at the Quilt Shop.

Well, it has something to do with sleepless nights. Last Friday, Ginny saw this front cover of Quilt Mania magazine...... She went home Friday night and couldn't stop thinking about this house quilt on the cover.
She came in Saturday and had a whole plan of what fabrics she was going to use. I came into work, she told me about it, I was hooked, I made a plan of what fabrics I am using..... Amy came in later, same thing, and Lois and Mary too!
Now here is the fun part. We are all going to make this quilt. We are getting the pattern, but for now we are using the magazine. Every week I will post pictures of blocks, but we aren't telling you who's blocks they are. That's your job to guess, here are the first 2 blocks. Who do you think made these?

Want to join us? The house part of the block is easy, the patchwork part of the house is 6 inches. As soon as we get the pattern, I'll let you know.

BERNINA Club

Yesterday was our Virtual BERNINA Club. We learned about a new pattern, the Monaco Bag.
The webinar showed us how to embellish it with machine embroidery, ruffles, topstitching and couching. It was a fun meeting! Plus we got to see the new BERNINA 550 up close!

More new fabrics arrived this week, a really pretty blue and green group. I will take pictures today and post them later.

Ginny is back and raring to go! She has some great ideas for some fun new projects! I'm starting some holiday sewing.... yes I said holiday sewing. I have a wonderful room mom this year in my class. She comes in once a week to help, she gets me whatever I need, she is just fantastic. She deserves a special gift, so I started the Weekender Tote for her! I finished the front, now to do the back and sides.
Put on your thinking cap.... who can you sew for this holiday season?

I am anxiously awaiting pictures from today's wedding....

Maybe I wasn't paying attention today.
All last week we worked on patterns in first grade....

You would think I would be pretty good at patterns by now?
WRONG
Today I started a quilt for our next Groovy Girl meeting.... it is called Texas Two Step by Terry Atkinson.
I was happily sewing along, but when I finished the 6th row.... I looked at it, then looked at the pattern cover. Mine didn't look like that....
Then I figured it out, I reversed the fabrics. I put the background fabric where the prints should have been, and the prints where the background fabric should be....

Well, I'm not taking it all apart. I kind of like it. I call it Texas Backward Step.
Just call this a happy accident. :)

Ahhhhhhh, the big weekend is almost here, the last Quilt Shop wedding, ( I hope) for a while.
Ginny's daughter Ginger is getting married Saturday at St. Patrick's Catherdral in NYC.
The Quilt Shop will be open all weekend. We are still taking sign ups for our Jelly Roll Races, and for all of our other classes.
Amy's Weekend Tote class is Monday night, lots of our classes start next week.
We would love to see you this weekend, so come on over and see our class samples.

We still have some openings in our brand new beginners class. This class will give you the opportunity to finish a quilt, quilted and bound with binding. You take the class with Lois, learning to cut, sew, etc. Then when your top is done, I will teach you machine quilting, using your walking foot. Then Lois comes back and teaches how to do the binding. Wouldn't it be nice to have a finished quilt?
Know someone who wants to learn? This is a great class for a newbie!

It is Fabulous! This is a new version of the Fab Five quilt. Ginny made this one out of our spookiest Halloween fabrics. No applique on this one, just a large band of one of our frightening fabrics.

Memories of 9/11

This day has been a day of memories, remembering where you were, who you were with, etc. I remember being at recess, seeing the most beautiful blue sky. One of our teacher aides came out to tell us what was going on. We were told not to tell the kids, to just have a normal day. I remember the teachers huddled around the tv in the teachers room at lunch. I remember our Vietnamese parents picking up their children with fear in their eyes.

A few days later we started making flag wall hangings at the Quilt Shop. So many people came to make a flag, sewers, non sewers, it didn't matter. They were keeping their hands busy, to help heal their hearts.

I remember that is when I started collecting patriotic fabrics! I still collect patriotic fabric and probably always will.

Did you notice the class in our schedule called Jelly Roll Races? This is the finished project from that class. This is going to be one of our most fun events ever. For your $60 fee you will get a bag of 40 pre cut 2 1/2 inch strips. You will sew as quickly as you can, to create this quilt, with our instructions!
We will have prizes, snacks, and as always lots of fun! This would be a great event to bring your friends to have fun with. The more the merrier! It is just straight sewing, and you even get a pit crew to change your bobbin, oil your machine, get you a snack, etc.

This great new Alexander Henry fabric arrived this week.... perfect timing for our jelly roll races!

And the new BERNINA 550 QE arrived! This is a great machine. It comes with the BSR, a walking foot and if you get it during the Autumn special, you will get the pattern for the silk quilt shown here, plus the silk fabrics needed to make the silk quilt shown here, along with a new pair of scissors and a free #57 1/4 inch foot. Fall Schedule 2011

Here is a sneak peak at one of our new fall classes. Our beginners class has changed just a bit. Our goal is to have you finish a quilt, from cutting to binding! You start out with Lois, learning to rotary cut, then piece your blocks, and piece your quilt top. Then I come along and teach you how to machine quilt your quilt using your walking foot. Finally Lois teaches you how to add your binding, and there you go, a finished quilt! At least that is the plan. Know someone who wants to learn to quilt? Or better yet, do you need a refresher course to start you quilting again? Our schedule will be coming out this week! Make sure we have your e mail, or check here on the blog!

I have created the slideshow of the Fall 2011 schedule pictures. The Alpine Lake quilt, is the one on the cover of the Summer at the Lake Quilt book. It is beautiful. Happy Wednesday to everyone. I finished this up last night, it is from a wonderful website called Moda Bake Shop. Sponsored by Moda fabrics, this website is filled with free projects. I've always loved Dresden Plate, this one just caught my eye because of the bright colors and the pretty yellow background. Directions are included to make the table topper, or a quilt. The plates were made from a charm pack of 5 inch squares. I used the Easy Dresden tool. It made cutting all the blades very easy. We have it at the Quilt Shop. I also used one of our new threads, the varigated Cotona thread. I used the blanket stitch on my BERNINA . Now to layer it and quilt it!
